Chandrashila trek is one of the most popular treks among Indian trekking enthusiasts who only have a short period of time for trekking in the Garhwal Himalayas. Chandrashila is summit of the Tungnath. It literally means “Moon Rock”. It is located at a height of about 3,700 meters (12,100 ft.) above sea level. This peak provides panoramic views of The Himalayas, including Nandadevi, Trisul, Kedar Peak, Bandarpunch and Chaukhamba peaks. There are various legends associated with this place. According to one such legend, this is the place where Lord Rama meditated after defeating the demon-king Ravana. Another legend says that moon-god Chandra spent time here in penance.
The trek to the peak is 5 km. The trek route that starts from Chopta takes you to Tungnath (highest Shiva temple in the World). The trek till Tungnath is well maintained by the Govt. of Uttarakhand. From Chopta till Tungnath, the trek goes through the alpine forests of Deodar, Red Buransh & Oak. People can enjoy mesmerizing views of sunset, sunrise, The Himalayan range, Monal bird, musk deer, snow leopard, bears, foxes etc.
From Tunghnath till Chandarshila, the trek is approximately 1 kilometer long, and quite steep. Though shorter in distance, the steep ascent makes this trek rigorous. This trek is undertaken throughout the year although during winter season due to snowfall this trek becomes hard as the road to Chopta gets closed.
